Star Trek

*****
Being an avid fan of Star Trek (the Original Series, Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager) I have been looking forward with great anticipation for the last two years to the new movie that everyone hopes will revive the franchise.
I've seen it twice now. The first time a buddy of mine (also an avid Treky) went with me and a couple other people and both of us were severely disappointed because it reinvents the story, creating another reality so that the series can continue with 100% new material. But after seeing it the second time I am hooked. Not because it tells as great a story as Next Generation but because it has its own unique feel. The special effects were simply amazing and the movie opened with good characterization (actually the opening scene was excellent; I liked it the first time, too). The character of Spock disappointed me because it deviated from Vulcans as classic Star Trek portraid them. However, taking this movie as a reinvention of the franchise, I really enjoyed it the second time around. There were a couple vulgar sentences that I wish the director had left out, and the bedroom scene was innappropriate (don't bring your child to this movie). I would give this movie four out of five stars.
Live long, and prosper!

Announcement!

On June 6th I will be marrying the love of my life Kelley. I am in the midst of moving out of my parents' house and into my appartment. As a result I am not very organized and am running around getting the necessary things ready. Posting to my blog will be sporadic for the week before the wedding and I will not post at all for the two weeks following. I have left June open; there are no appearances in my schedule for that month, because I will be focusing on media contacts and preparations for some important events in July, August, and September.

God has blessed me with a wonderful girl and I am looking forward to spending the rest of my life with her!

"Swords of the Six" reviewed by Phyllis Wheeler

Phyllis Wheeler hosts the Christian Fantasy Review and she just finished reading my novel. She gave Swords of the Six a wonderful review. Check it out: Swords of the Six-book review

Plainfield High School in CT

I had a wonderful time--and I mean a GREAT time--speaking in the library at Plainfield High School this week. There were around twenty attendees, mostly students from the Central school. I passed out books, held a drawing for a free novel, talked about writing and my publishing journey, and projected a series of images on the screen.

This was a great opportunity and a real success. I sold a few books at the event and I don't think it is coincidence that a few more copies sold online within the next day.

"The Trees of Angar Forest" in MindFlights Magazine

My short story The Trees of Angar Forest has now been published in MindFlights Magazine.

Tease: What if a young man had to wrestle a tree in order to get the timber to build a home for his new bride?

Don't forget to check it out!

The Bones of Makaidos-a book review

From the time that Billy Bannister and Bonnie Silver fled the dragon slayer in the Dragons In Our Midst books, I fell in love with this series. Bryan Davis captures the wonder of discovery and teaches biblical truths along the way. The Bones of Makaidos ended the story of Billy and Bonnie in a way that I found completely satisfying. I loved the character Abaddon. Bryan Davis has a knack for powerful dialogue that teaches truth without 'preaching' to the reader. If you have not read his series . . . you are missing out on a great tale!

Another Sell-Out Event!

Borders in Waterford CT
Another great event! We sold out the store's stock and they bought an additional 10 copies for their shelves! Thanks to their manager, Erica, I was placed right near the door. One woman came along and said she'd already bought Swords of the Six for her daughter . . . she said her daughter is devouring it!

BordersExpress SOLD OUT!

By the time I arrived at the Borders Express store in the Crystal Mall on Saturday, they had already sold all except one copy of Swords of the Six! I sold their last one in the first five minutes and then sold 22 copies from my own stock--on top of that! Needless to say this was the most successful signing to date. Fran, the store manager, was very pleased; she now has to place an order for more books because she owes me 25 copies (I left three for their display). I am very pleased to have met my goal for that day: my novel was Sold Out!

Bank booksigning

I sold a surprising number of books on Friday at the Canterbury Savings Institute Bank. It was relaxing and fun. I literally had just parked in the lot and was going to get my books out of the car, when a guy getting into the car in the adjacent space asked about it; I sold one to him on the spot!

Saturday is Borders Express and I'm really looking forward to it; they were almost sold out of their copies of the book last I checked... I'm going to do my best to get all the books out the door so that they have to place a fresh order!

At the Killingly Public Library

I met this new young fan at my recent signing at the Killingly Library. Apparently he was so eager to get the book that he asked his father to rush him from the bus to the library to catch me before I left. We only sold two books that day, but this meeting with a new reader made the trip worth while and really made my day! As he left the building with book in hand, he flipped it open and started reading as he walked to the car. …It brought to memory many times that I had buried my head in a new book at his age.

In the Writer's Mind

"What is it like to have all those stories inside your head?" How often I've been asked that question and how often I've told readers that my imagination is always building upon ideas that I am bursting to write down. It can be wearisome and it is certainly a distraction, but overall it is something I relish. During long hours at work the stories are bursting to be written. The pain my characters feel over a loss, or the exuberance of victory over evil or hardship... it is marvelous. God performed one of his kindest blessings when he created human imagination. Mine is constantly active to the point that I have to pull myself out of it sometimes in order to live in the real world. The world of Osira continuously turns in my mind. I can see it, far off in some unexplored corner of the universe. It hides amidst a miriad of fantastic stars and an explorer wanders past, unaware of all that transpires on the world below. Once, in the distant past, a ship blasted away from that world with a dragon on board and in command. But now the past civilizations are buried beneath the desert sands of Resgeria and other lands. Now new civilizations have been established and the ancient power of Living Fire is contained within the sword of Ilfedo. ...and the story only grows, deepens, twisting through the strands of imagination, feeding on it. I write because I must. I write because the stories will not be silent.

WELCOME TO THE WRITING SITE OF SCOTT APPLETON

"Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones." -Proverbs 16:24

In a world where morality is forsaken and Christ neglected, wholesome books are uncommon. The themes of my writing are love, self-sacrifice, and honor.

I see my generation turning from God to the gods of this world. I see homes torn apart in the pursuit of pleasure and self-gratification. Children are murdered by the millions every year . . . without ever seeing the world outside their mothers' wombs. Through fiction I strive to encourage those who are willing, to stand against these things and be heroes and heroines; chivalrous, gentle, full of righteous indignation, and the fear and love of their Creator.
